It occurred to us the other day that we’ve never done a proper intro for those of you lovely followers who don’t know our story… for those that do - scroll on! 🥱
Barneby Gates was founded in 2009 by two pals - Vanessa Barneby and Alice Gates. Our friendship goes way back to our childhood in rural Hampshire where we bonded at the age of ten over ponies and other mischief. In ‘99 we graduated from Edinburgh Uni ~ Vanessa embarked on a career in magazines, first as a stylist at UK House & Garden, and then as Living Editor at British Vogue; Alice studied figurative painting in Italy, and alongside a successful painting career she designed prints for various ready-to-wear fashion labels. In 2009 the stars ✨ aligned and the time felt right to pool our experience. Our first wallpaper collection came to fruition in a basement flat in London while we juggled the births of our first children (@dolly_jones new book documents the reality of this 🤹‍♀️ very well!) Naturally, we looked to our past for inspiration, and many of our designs - then and now - nod to our country roots 🦋 🦌 🐝 🐎 🍃 In 2010 we launched to the trade at Decorex - where Vanessa’s mum wheeled her new born baby round the exhibition space for 4 days so he could continue to be breastfed 🤯 Our move from London to the country ticked a lot of boxes - both personally with our ever increasing families, and for the fast growing business. We have recently moved again from a small working studio to a large HQ in Wiltshire’s beautiful Pewsey Vale, that incorporates our design studio, warehouse and showroom all under one roof. Our collection includes wallpaper and fabric designed by us here at the studio, and printed in the UK using traditional rotary printing techniques. We also offer a lovely collection of made to order cushions - all hand-made here at the studio 🪡 🧵 Our showroom is open 5 days a week, from 10am-4pm and visitors are welcome to drop in for a cup of tea and a browse through the complete range of fabrics and papers. We are always happy to advise re colours and paints, and ensure you leave armed with info and samples to help you on your design journey

Our studio is situated in the very beautiful Vale of Pewsey 🇬🇧 As I left for home today I couldn’t drive past this spot without pulling over to take a pic. The stripe of purple Phacelia sitting beneath the Pewsey White Horse 🐎 (which was carved into the chalky hillside in 1937 to commemorate the coronation of King George VI) was simply breathtaking in the late afternoon light - and I wish you could smell the scent too! 💜
